01/02/09 - Figures Sky High At Swindon's Link Centre As People Give Figure Skating A Twirl

Cllr Justin Tomlinson Joining In The Fun At The Link Ice-Rink

Scores of people in Swindon are following in Melinda Messenger’s footsteps and taking to the ice, inspired by her success on the popular TV show Dancing On Ice.

Last week more than 3,000 people took to the ice rink for casual skating sessions at the Link Centre, in West Swindon, as competition hots up on the hit ITV series. That’s more than 40 per cent higher than the average weekly figure, which stands at around 2,200 skaters.

Both family and individual sessions are proving popular, particularly at weekends. With a capacity for around 600 skaters per session, the rink is coping well with the increased demand. Hire skates are included in the price of a casual session and with boots from children’s size 5 and upwards to adult size 13, there is room for all the family.

Although February is traditionally the busiest month, Swindon-born star Melinda Messenger’s appearance on Dancing On Ice has given numbers an extra boost.

Before filming for the show started, the Swindon-born star took her first tentative steps on the ice at the Link Centre with friends.

Melinda said: “The change is amazing, considering when I came to the Link Centre rink a few months back I could barely stay upright. I’m absolutely loving the show and am hugely grateful for all the support people are giving – it’s fantastic, so I want to say a big thank you.”

The Link Centre, which is open seven days a week, also boasts a shop to cater for all your skating needs. With prices starting at around £40, there are boots to suit all budgets and abilities.

Councillor Justin Tomlinson, said: “It’s great that so many people are trying something new and giving ice skating a go. Skating is a really good form of exercise and also fantastic fun for people of all ages and abilities. The rink at the Link Centre is first class and I hope everyone will continue to make the most of this facility both now and after the Dancing On Ice series.  Myself and friends had a great time on Saturday ourselves at the ice-rink.”
