30/07/08 - Swindon 'Swings To The Tories' As Local Conservatives Call For Early Election

Swindon’s Conservative candidates have joined calls for an early general election  after an opinion poll in key marginal seats showed Labour support is collapsing.

Justin Tomlinson and Robert Buckland were speaking after the poll showed the Conservatives a huge 24% ahead of Labour in vital ‘swing seats’ similar to Swindon.

“This poll covers the Conservatives’ top 30 target seats, and Swindon South is at number 33 on that list, so it’s a fair bet the figures are much the same here” , said Robert Buckland, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Swindon South.

“It’s now obvious that people in areas like Swindon are fed up with this crumbling government and can’t wait for the chance to throw them out.

“We need strong leadership, but Labour is too busy plotting against Gordon Brown instead of concentrating on peoples’ concerns over rising prices and the economy” , Mr Buckland said.

“The outcome of the general election will be decided in places like Swindon, and it’s now quite clear what the voters think, so we say ‘bring it on’" , said Justin Tomlinson, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Swindon North.

“This poll shows Labour’s standing in marginal areas is at rock bottom, but we’re not complacent and we know there’s only one poll that counts.

“So Gordon Brown must give the British people the chance to have their say, stop dithering, and call a general election” , Mr Tomlinson said.
