Speed Camera Debate - Swindon
Following on from the national coverage of the 'Speed Camera Debate' it is essential local residents have a greater say in their role.
Robert Buckland, Swindon South Prospective MP, "It's clear that there are many important road safety concerns that cannot be addressed using speed cameras. The government's very heavy dependence on fixed speed cameras leads to a neglect of deeply worrying issues like tackling rogue drivers.
"It is important that local authorities innovate to find the best road safety solutions for their area - one solution does not fit all. I will be very interested to see the results of the debate now occurring in Swindon."
Cllr Justin Tomlinson, Swindon North Prospective MP, "There is a real suspicion that the government's preference for speed cameras over other measures such as flashing signs is motivated by revenue raising considerations not road safety ones. Local residents should have a greater say on not only cameras but on how we improve road safety."
