17/03/08 - Labour Housing Minister In A Muddle In Swindon!

Swindon Advertiser, Letters Page

Sir,

I am delighted to see that so many Government Ministers suddenly want to come to see some of the great work being done by Housing and Adult Social Care in Swindon; namely Cavendish Square, Upham Road Learning Disability Day Centre and Pinehurst. However, I do have to feel a little sorry for them as, it is clear from the quotes that have appeared in the Advertiser, that they have swallowed the nonsense peddled to them by the local Labour Group. For example, Caroline Flint claims that the Conservative Council has failed to meet its Housing targets. Now which Housing targets might these be? That Swindon completed more house builds last year than anywhere else in the Country?; that on eligible planning applications in the last 12 months, the Council is delivering 36% affordable housing against a target of 30%?; or is it Promise 42 where we promise to deliver an average of 300 affordable homes per year up to 2010 which we are on target to exceed? Answers on a postcard please……..
