04/10/06 - Tomlinson & Buckland Welcome David Cameron's Conference Speech

DAVID CAMERON: A NEW DIRECTION

In his first full speech to the Conservative Party Conference, David Cameron has emphasised the following:

  1. Tony Blair explained his priorities in three words: education, education, education. I can do it in three letters. NHS.

  2. Families are not just the basic unit of society, they are the best. We will set a basic test for all our policies: does it help the family?

  3. We will not take risks with the economy. We will not make promises we can’t keep. We believe in sound money and stability always comes first.

  4. We will encourage faith schools to take social responsibility for community cohesion by admitting a proportion of pupils from other faiths.

  5. Social responsibility means a Britain where instead of always turning to the state for the answer, we turn to each other and ask: what more can we do together to solve this problem?

  6. We must face up to the fact that progress towards our nation’s priorities is never free. There’s always a price to be paid. We must show that we understand the price of progress, and tell people what it is. Not after we get into government, but before.
