Since taking control of the Council in June 2004, we are proud to have delivered an incredible transformation in the Councils performance moving from one of the worst performing Councils in the country to a rapidly improving 2 Star Council, now seeking 3 Star status.
Some of our achievements speak for themselves:
Swindon 2010 50 Promises
We have set out a clear ambitious agenda of targets to build a better Swindon. These are about delivering change and raising standards.
New Central Library
The new central library will open in 2008 after 35 years of inaction and broken promises. The building work starts this summer.
Regeneration of Swindon Town Centre
Demolition has started and we are working to deliver an exciting modern vibrant high quality town centre.
In the last two years we have delivered the two lowest increases in the last ten years. Millions of pounds removed from the budget but still delivered improved services at the same time. There will be no return to 42% tax increases in three years under Labour. We have a 4 year strategy to deliver affordable levels of council tax and capital projects totalling some £240 million of which the Central Library is but one.
This is back under our control and we are building and opening 5 new schools this September.
A lot done but much more still to do. A proud record which has been recognised by Government, Auditors and independent observers.
