03/04/06 - Liberals Throw The Towel In!

In the last set of local elections for Swindon in 2004, the Lib Dems came last in every single seat.  Following this, Cllr Michael Dickinson (Central) ward joined the Conservatives, and Cllr Geraldine Frost (Freshbrook) became an Independent, leaving them with only 5 Councillors.

Today was the close of nominations for the forthcoming local elections, the Lib Dems have failed to put forward a candidate in Blunsdon, Covingham & Nythe & Stratton St. Margaret.

Of the five current Lib Dem Cllrs, 3 are retiring this year.  Cllr Evemy, Cllr Johnson and Cllr Shephard all of who have had a turn as group leader whilst they have lurched from disaster to disaster which has seen them lose so many Councillors.

In North Swindon it will be a simple straight fight between the Conservatives and Labour.
